Get Up Mum reviewed by Nicole

A beautiful, sad and hopeful memoir – Get Up Mum is the story of 12 year old Justin Heazlewood’s challenging childhood as he copes with his mother’s chronic mental illness.

As despairing as that may sound, you don’t feel sorry for Justin but you admire his strength and resilience to keep going in the face of dark days and nights. And what makes his writing truly beautiful is that he never disrespects or antagonises his mother, he shows her enduring love and patience, qualities we could all learn from.

A book like this highlights the importance of support services for children that are left to care for sick parents. This book was brilliantly narrated and very endearing and I absolutely recommend this book to others.
