Nona & Me by Clare Atkins

Nona & Me This debut young adult novel shows the divide that still exists between many non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal people. Told from the perspective of Rosie as a child and a teenager we learn of her childhood, growing up with Nona, her family and community. She sees her as a sister and best friend.

Nona moves away for a while and then returns when Rosie is a teenager and is now at the high school in the mining town nearby. Her new friends are not as accepting as Rosie was, and for a time she struggles with where her loyalties will lie.

Told with key events in Australia happening in the background, it is a great way to get people thinking about these issues.
