The Birdman’s Wife reviewed by Wendy

A thoroughly interesting read. Melissa Ashley has brought back to life a woman who needs her story told – not just because of her obvious artistic talent, but also because of her courage and dedication. In 1838 she left her four young children behind in England, knowing she would not see them for at least two years, to travel to Australia with her husband.

She worked tirelessly and in difficult conditions to complete sketches and watercolours of the Australian birds for her husband’s books. She remained very much in her husband’s shadow until her letters were discovered in 1938. This book is a fascinating account of her life and it made me want to see her illustrations for myself.
