The Inaugural Meeting of the Fairvale Ladies Book Club, written by Sophie Green, is set in 1970s outback Australia. Set on Fairvale, a vast cattle station run by Joe and Sybil – a loving couple with two older sons. The book focuses on five women – all from very different backgrounds and all in the outback for different reasons and with different wishes. Sybil knows them all and brings them together through literature – a book club. Each of the women’s stories and needs are delved into throughout the book, and their friendships blossom and move through grief, accidents, love, racism, separation and love.
The setting for the book is perfect – isolated, beautiful, erratic and unpredictable. The character of Sybil is the opposite – stoic, strong, predictable and as stable as a table. the parallels between environment and life are beautifully written – the big rains, the desert.
I really enjoyed the read – it’s easy to read and can be put down for a few days and easily picked up again.
