Kate van Hooft’s debut novel We See The Stars was a beautiful and compelling story centred around a young 11 year old boy, Simon. He is different to his peers, outcast because he chooses not to speak.
As the story unfolds you discover that Simon has experienced great trauma in his young life and these experiences have shaped him into a timid and voiceless young man. However, an unlikely friendship with Cassie, a fellow classmate who is rough around the edges due to her own personal trauma, helps Simon regain his confidence and they share many adventures together.
If you enjoyed reading Jasper Jones, this story has some familiar undertones and is told with compassion and emotion throughout. It was a thoroughly enjoyable novel filled with mystery and suspense.
