After reviewed by Pat

Nikki Gemmell wrote After as a form of catharsis following the suicide of her mother with whom she had a complicated relationship. This book explores her difficulty in facing not just her mother’s death (which would have been difficult enough) but the fact that her mother chose to end her own life without discussion or any farewell, despite the fact that it had been a long time in the planning.

It details the impact on Nikki’s family and those around her, which leads to further exploration of her relationships with her own children.   Her writing is honest, forthright and at times gut-wrenching, and her willingness to tell her story “warts and all” is to be admired.
