Australia reviewed by Marie

Friedrich Gerstacker supported his family by writing about his travels which were financed by his publisher. An account of his adventures in Australia in 1851 is very entertaining.

His descriptions of Aborigines and race relations, his canoe trip down the Murray, his encounters with German families and of the gold rushes in NSW is lively.

The book has explanatory notes, and is indexed. Wakefield Press has translated this colonial history from the German.
