I can’t imagine how devastating it would be to be diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia at the age of 58. Wendy Mitchell has written a memoir which begins with her noticing the first signs of the disease. The subsequent gradual loss of her independence and confidence, and how she struggles to maintain that which she has left gives us some insight into the tragedy that is Alzheimer’s.
At no time in the book does Mitchell wade in self pity or dwell on her fear of not recognising her daughters – instead she finds ways to fight back and educate people about the disease and support those with it. Still Alice was a great read and movie but this is a real person telling her own story.
