The prologue of this book introduces us to the grown up Nick Starling who has, he tells us, done his best to forget 1985 – the year he turned eight. Then, by chance, he meets someone who was very important to him that year and the memories come flooding back.
Round 1 is the title of the first chapter and we now see life through the eyes of eight year old Nicky. His parents’ relationship is in tatters, his grandmother has just died and his father is a AFL tragic who lives for his beloved Hawthorn and longs for his only son to follow as earnestly as he does. Alas Nicky just loves Shakespeare not football and wants to write and act out plays.
A funny/sad novel about how hard it is to be a child who just doesn’t fit in with his family’s expectations.
