You Belong Here reviewed by Wendy

It is 1975. Jen and Steven are eighteen and in love. They marry and Steven works long hours while Jen struggles with mothering their three young children.

We watch with trepidation as the marriage falls apart wreaking havoc on each member. The novel then follows the three children through their lives with the unsorted trauma of their childhood influencing their choices and relationships.

This sounds bleak but there are moments of hope and glimpses of the siblings working out their complicated relationships and moving forward with their lives.

The  ‘Australian-ness’ of the novel is refreshing with many references to popular music, food and tv shows of these years ( 1972-2015).
